Experience

This batch of Caps Frozen Lemons flower from Billo is everything a great sativa should be and is especially worth trying if you love classic lemon-heavy strains that get you moving. While the flavor is definitely limonene-dominant in a delicate, soft way on your palette, what really shines are its powerful energizing effects that don’t leave you anxious or twitchy. Billo also took home 3rd place at the 2023 THC Classic with this strain, as if the effects and flavor weren’t enough to get excited about. If you need to turn the power on mid day to get things done or do something active, Billo’s Caps Frozen Lemons is something you’ll have to sample.

Appearance, Bud Structure, Density, & Hydration

Billo’s grow cultivation team clearly put some love into this one because the first thing you notice after getting acquainted with its lively lemon aroma is the heavily frosted coating of trichomes. The variable lime to army green calyxes are completely covered with only the ends of them poking out underneath a forest of resin glands. The bud structure in the eighth we received was tight, fractal-esque, and tidy after having received a skilled hand trim. It’s almost as though the plant itself wished to present itself cleanly, with or without the scissors. Using a cigar hygrometer in a sealed glass jar for 4 hours yielded the relative humidity of the flower, which sat at 38%. This is pretty standard for the arid climate of Colorado if not slightly on the dry side. The buds yielded easily to being broken up without being crispy.

A little background might be helpful: Caps Frozen Lemons was bred by the famous geneticist Capulator from Freezer Burn x Lemon Fire F3 and typically manifests itself strongly in the sativa realm of possible chemotypes. What we received was far from wispy and instead had a satisfying texture balance that made it easy to roll up into a joint or pack in a bowl. I chose the latter.

Aroma

Did we mention this strain is heavy on the limonene? Although there wasn’t a terpene test provided, it’s clear that the limonene, perhaps a touch of caryophyllene or valencene, and what must be myrcene weave themselves together quite nicely in the jar. The smooth, lemon aroma is complemented by a hint of loamy earth that doubles down when broken up, leaving a citrusy mist in the air longer than you would expect. Caps Frozen Lemons is very pleasurable on the nostrils by providing a certain freshness to it without being harsh. I found it reminiscent of a more affable version of a strain such Lemon Skunk or Super Lemon Haze (are those strains still making the rounds? I hope so.)

Mode of Consumption

My go-to way to enjoy flower these days when I’m by myself is always to pick just a few calyxes and stuff them into a glass bowl I’ve had since college. This helps me make sure I’m hitting green every time, and although it was clear after breaking some of the Caps Frozen Lemons up that it’d be perfectly suited for a joint as well, I stuck with what’s tried and true for me. I packed only perhaps one quarter of the bowl full, burned it all down, and barely coughed. My real goal was not to get completely torched but to replenish my mental gas tank in order to finally clean the hell out of my car after a long winter.

Flavors, Mouthfeel, & Ash Color

The name of the strain here is one of those very suitable ones that hits the nail on the head without being fictitiously appealing. Actual frozen lemons, which you will most likely encounter in a sorbet or lemonade slushy, are more gentle than their warm lemon meringue pie or room temperature cousins. That was the case here, as a sweet yet earthy mixture hits your palette immediately. The little kick of funk in the back of my mouth lingered briefly after exhaling, which rounded things out quite nicely. The smoke itself was very smooth in the quantity I partook in, which owes itself partially to the strain’s unique blend of terpenes but also largely to the growing process itself. The final flush, dry, and cure must have gone off without a hitch here as the ash at the bottom of my bowl was a nice slightly grayish white. The Caps Frozen Lemons we got from Billo thankfully offered all of the general hallmarks of well cultivated cannabis.

Effects

This was a mission accomplished concerning what I was hoping to achieve against what actually happened. As with pretty much all smoked flower, I became swiftly altered. I then entered “go” mode about a minute later. While a lot of comparable strains might have a good bit of haze pedigree in them, the Caps Frozen Lemons offers a sunny high that keeps you going without the racy aspects many heavy sativas can bring to the table. In the two-ish hour duration I experienced its full effects I methodically got to work on an auto detailing project I’d been putting off, all while listening to a pretty high level podcast on the shifting incentives of media in today’s world. I felt like I was able to absorb and retain the information in the podcast while working up a real sweat on my car, all without missing a beat. In case you were wondering, are the incentives in today’s newsmedia indeed fucked? Yes, yes they are. This was all immediately after going to the gym, so I really wanted to put it to the test, which it passed in my book.

There wasn’t much come down or sleepy aftereffect to speak of, just shifting down a gear and getting on to the rest of my day. It also didn’t make me any hungrier than normal, which was welcome as I could have easily made excuses to go nuts after everything I just did. This sativa offered me clarity and energy but wasn’t quite so lucid that I forgot I was high at all, which some ultra clear sativas tend to do to me. It was there the whole time, feeding me little bits of stamina and quirky thoughts every time I paused to assess the work so far. I feel like I could definitely lift weights, go snowboarding, or find some other similarly strenuous activity and get a similar experience. All in, this is the kind of strain I usually try to find when I want to smoke flower. If you need some cannabis that will help you get your chores done, Billo’s Caps Frozen Lemons is worth picking up.
